About Pantai Morib
Pantai Morib was one of the first landing points for the British and Indian Army liberation forces during the end of WWII. Pantai Morib is a holiday beach destination in Banting, Selangor, overlooking the straits of Melaka. Banting is the nearest town, located 15km away and is roughly 30km north of Bagan Lalang.
Almost the entire seafront has been converted into an esplanade, with only a small beach at the side. Pantai Morib is popular in August, during public holidays, weekends and festive holidays, attracting 10,000 visitors annually. Pantai Morib is a nice place to rest. There are hotels, a golf course, rest houses and other facilities such as: recreation parks, gazebos, playgrounds, walkways and food courts. |
The TaskThe whole of year 10 at the promenade.
For this Geography Assignment, we are focusing on sustainable coastal management and investigating the human interactions on Pantai Morib. We are trying to answer the focus question "How can Pantai Morib be sustainably managed?", using the research and data we collected as a year level and by using online resources. We also have to research about coastal management strategies used in Australia and recommend ideas of how they can be implemented in Pantai Morib to improve the coast, because curently it is not sustainably managed.

Collecting DataGroup 6 doing their beach profile.
In order to collect the data, year 10 split up into 9 groups. Each group was assigned a section of the beach to investigate. We collected data on the amount of human interaction on the beach by creating a beach profile using a meter wheel to measure the distance and inclinometers to measure the changes in the surface of the sand. We also conducted a litter survey by picking up rubbish and separating them into different categories, whilst tallying the amount of trash. We also drew some sketches of the surroundings including the sea defenses to analyse.
Pieces of litter spotted on the beach.

The SitePantai Morib facing the mangroves.
Pantai Morib is cared for under coastal management. The beach had a low tide when we went and a few people present. We discovered from our litter tally that even though it was a small beach, there was a lot of litter. From the beach profiles, we discovered the beach had different levels of incline throughout the whole stretch. There are also magroves one of the far ends of the beach, usually flooded in high tide. There are 2 major sea defences used to protect the coast, while lowering erosion. There is a promenade which provides services and goods, which is actually larger than the beach.
